Biblical association holds convention; elects new trustees

MANILA, July 22, 2011―The Catholic Biblical Association of the Philippines (CBAP) elected its new board of trustees during its annual convention held at the Betania Retreat House last July 15-17.

An association of bible scholars, CBAP has 60 members, among them bible exegetes, theologians and professors based in the Philippines.

The organization was established in 1999, with the goal to advance biblical studies in the country.

The members meet yearly for a national convention and publish research and proceedings.

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo and San Fernando, Pampanga Bishop Virgilio Pablo David presented two major papers during the convention.

David is also the current chair of the Episcopal Commission on Biblical Apostolate of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

Officers elected during the convention were Fr. Leander Barrot, OAR as president, and Sr. Nicetas Vargas, OSA, vice-president. Sr. Bernardita Dianzon, FSP and Fr. Clarence Marquez, OP, were re-elected secretary and treasurer, respectively. Also re-elected were Fr. Randolf Flores, SVD, Sr. Miriam Alejandrino, OSB, Fr. Fruto Ramirez, SJ, and Fr. Victor Nicdao, as members of the Board.

A Recoletos, Barrot is Vice President for Academics of San Sebastian College-Recoletos (Manila) and Director of its Canlubang Campus. He holds a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (SSL) from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (2001) and at present teaches New Testament at the school of theology of the Recoletos Formation Center (Quezon City).

Vargas is Assistant Professor of Biblical Theology at the Loyola School of Theology (Quezon City) and a former President of the University of Regina Carmeli (Malolos City). She obtained a Doctorate of Philosophy in Religious Studies/New Testament from the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium). She is the author of an upcoming book titled Word and Witness: Introduction to the Gospel of John. She is also a Guest Professor of Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay City.

Dianzon is Associate Professor of Biblical Theology at the Loyola School of Theology. She studied at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and obtained a double doctorate—PhD and SThD in Sacred Scripture from the Ateneo de Manila University (Quezon City) and Loyola School of Theology (Quezon City) respectively. She currently teaches the Letters of St. Paul and Biblical Greek at the Loyola School of Theology and at the Divine Word Seminary.

Marquez is Director of the Institute of Preaching (at Santo Domingo in Quezon City) while also serving as Vice President for Finance of the University of Santo Tomas (Manila). He obtained his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He did courses at the École biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem.

Flores was President of CBAP from 2008 to 2011. He finished his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and teaches Scripture courses and Biblical Hebrew at Divine Word Seminary and School of Christian Studies, University of Saint Joseph (Macau, China).

Alejandrino was former Dean of Studies of the Saint Alphonsus Theologate in Davao City. She currently teaches Scripture and courses and Biblical Hebrew at the Regional Major Seminary in Davao City (first semester) and at Divine Word Seminary (second semester). Alejandrino obtained her Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and Doctorate in Biblical Theology from the Pontifical Gregoriana University in Rome.

A former Dean of Studies of the Loyola School of Theology, Ramirez is an Associate Professor of Biblical Theology of the said school where he teaches Old Testament and Biblical Hebrew. He obtained his Licentiate in Sacred Scriptures from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome and Doctorate in Sacred Theology from Pontifical Gregorian University also in Rome.

Nicdao, Rector of the Mother of Good Counsel Seminary, (San Fernando, Pampanga), is an Assistant Professor of Biblical Theology at the Loyola School of Theology. He also teaches New Testament courses at the Institute of Formation and Religious Studies (IFRS, Quezon City) and Mother of Good Counsel Seminary. He is currently the Parish Priest of San Jose Parish in San Jose, San Fernando, Pampanga. Nicdao obtained his Doctorate in Sacred Theology from the Catholic University in Louvain (Belgium).

Alinsangan, another BOT member was a former Provincial Superior of the Society of Saint Paul. He teaches New Testament at Maryhill School of Theology (Quezon City) and Don Bosco Center of Studies (Parañaque City). Alinsangan holds a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome.

CBAP Announces the Election of New President, Officers and Members to its Board


Tagaytay City—July 16, 2011—The Catholic Biblical Association of the Philippines (CBAP) announced, at the bible-association’s annual convention, the election of Fr. Leander Barrot, OAR, Vice President for Academics of San Sebastian College-Recoletos (Manila) as president of CBAP (2011-2012).

Leander Barrot, OAR is Vice President for Academics of San Sebastian College-Recoletos (Manila) and Director of its Canlubang Campus. He holds a Licentiate in Sacred Scripture (SSL) from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (2001) and at present teaches New Testament at the school of theology of the Recoletos Formation Center (Quezon City).

Nicetas Vargas, OSA, Assistant Professor of Biblical Theology at the Loyola School of Theology (Quezon City) was elected Vice President. Vargas is a former President of the University of Regina Carmeli (Malolos City). Flores finished his Licentiate in Sacred Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome (1999) and teaches Scripture courses and Biblical Hebrew at Divine Word Seminary and School of Christian Studies, University of Saint Joseph (Macau, China).

The Catholic Biblical Association of the Philippines (CBAP) is an association of around sixty Bible exegetes, scholars, theologians and professors who are based in the Philippines. Founded in 1999, the CBAP aims to advance biblical studies in the country, holds an annual convention, and publishes its research and proceedings. Members must have at least a graduate degree equivalent to a Licentiate in Sacred Scriptures (SSL) or a Master with specialization in Biblical Science. They must possess an adequate knowledge of the Biblical languages: Hebrew and Greek. Six Days Before the CBAP 12th Convention

The ORGCOM said that around 68 (members, associates, and observers) have already signed up for the said convention.

Three leading Catholic publications will display their books at the convention: Claretian, St. Pauls and Logos.

Verbum Domini: The Word of God in the Life and Mission of the Church - CBAP 12th Annual Convention

Calling all members, associates, and observers!

The 12th CBAP annual convention will be held on July 15-17, 2011 at the Betania Retreat House, Tagaytay City.

The theme of our convention will focus on Verbum Domini, the post-synodal apostolic exortation of Benedict XVI. To download the document, please click here.

Two of our members who were delegates to the Synod on the Word of God in 2009 will be our major speakers:

1. Bishop Pablo David, DD (SThD, Catholic University of Louvain) will discuss the relationship between Exegesis and Theology in the Verbum Domini;

2. Bishop Broderick Pabillo, DD (SSL, Biblicum, Rome) will elaborate the pastoral implications of the document.
